I'm Back!!

With the CFA exam finally behind me, I take the slow and arduous road to re-acclimate myself back into society. Staying out past 11PM? Drinking a plethora of beers? Being social? After being in a strict study regiment for so long, resulting in self imposed anxiety and sacrifice, becoming a normal member of society is more difficult than one might expect. I feel a sort of emptiness – was it worth it? Obviously, the answer to that question depends largely on the exam results. None the less, the question fills me with a hollowness as it’s difficult to compare the uncertain benefits to the tangible costs. Ultimately though, I’m happy I participated in the CFA program, regardless of the results. I’ve always been one to push myself and try new things. The CFA program has challenged me on both a professional and personal level. If you’re not progressing, you’re regressing. Now let’s just hope I passed…

Hi CPACFA,
Congrats on finishing the CFA!

I have read your blog and am inspired that you have taken a career path that is similar to one that I had been planning. I am currently in a M.S. accounting program (recent college grad) and sitting for BEC this august, and recruiting for a financial services auditing job this fall. As an accounting student I have always been told auditing experience+ CPA will open doors down the road and it’s the best way to start a career. However I’m more interested in finance/ security analysis/asset management/earning a cfa. I planned to use contacts from auditing to facilitate that transition to finance. I know a top MBA is the best route, but I’m not so sure I can go through another 2 years of graduate school, additionally I would already have a M.S. in accounting.

Is there value added by the CPACFA combination in industry, or the finance or accounting professions? Will getting cpa+cfa at a young age help accelerate a career? Would an ‘Executive’ P/T MBA, that accepted my previous graduate credits, be more worthwhile than the cfa in my situation? Any advice? Thanks.
